1. Tuning

Schedule professional tuning 1-2 times per year.

Tune after moving the piano or significant climate changes. Although the frame and soundboard are more robust than a traditional piano, it’s important to keep in mind the actions we use are traditional in design and need the same care as a regular piano.

2. Restringing

For restringing it is important to order KLAVINS strings for your piano.

Only a professional should re-string your piano.

3. Cleaning

Dust the exterior weekly with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Clean keys with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap; dry immediately.

Avoid chemical cleaners or polishes. Brass components will however need brass polish.

Use a natural wax for buffing on non-action wooden parts for aesthetics and care.

4. Environment

Place piano in a stable environment (ideal: 20-25°C, 40-60% humidity).

Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, or high humidity areas.

Use a humidifier/dehumidifier if needed to maintain consistent humidity.

Never store any piano in high humidity areas, including ours!

Obviously keep your piano inside.

5. Wheels and Positioning

Don’t place the piano on unfinished or weak floors.

Sometimes the wheels will react with the wood and leave marks. Sufficiently finished wood does not have this issue.

Always use castors on floors you wish to protect from potential lubricant leaks from wheel bearings or concentrated pressure marks.

7. Action Maintenance

Have a technician inspect action parts (hammers, dampers, strings) annually.

Regulate action (adjust key/hammer response) every 2-5 years, depending on use.

Replace worn felt, springs, or strings as recommended by the technician.

8. Protection

Cover the piano when not in use to prevent dust buildup.

Keep food, drinks, and objects off the piano to avoid spills or scratches.

9. Playing

Play regularly. The world deserves to hear you!

Avoid excessive force to prevent strain on hammers and strings.

If you touch the strings, they’ll discolour. Don’t worry, it will sound fine. Don’t try to clean the strings.

10. Professional Care

Hire a qualified technician for repairs or adjustments.

Ask them to contact KLAVINS for precautions and advice.

Schedule deep cleaning or internal maintenance every 5-10 years.

11. Moving

Hire professional piano movers to prevent damage to action or structure.

12. Nuts and Bolts

Do not adjust nuts and bolts, many are bearing extreme loads. Please contact us with any concerns.
